Democratizing Ergonomics: How to Involve Everyone in Improving the Workplace

Thursday, April 16, 2020 2:00pm - 3:00pm EDT
Host: AIHA
By: Jeff Sanford, CPE, Director of Consulting and Ergonomics Engineer, Humantech and Ayla Yi, CPE, Senior Consultant and Ergonomics Engineer, Humantech

The field of ergonomics can be seen as a complex science comprised of experts who understand the physical and cognitive aspects of human beings as well as the engineering concepts around systems design and modeling. In the real world, ergonomics often necessitates collaboration of many groups, including safety, IH, engineering, operators, design, and IT personnel.

Quantitative assessments for identifying musculoskeletal risk factors are skills-based and require training, competency, and practice. Ergonomics teams can get bogged down by the dreaded “paralysis by analysis” and spend valuable time finding issues in the workplace versus spending their time fixing the issues.

With recent advances in technology, it is time to break the trend and democratize ergonomics, make it accessible to everyone. Ergonomics teams should be equipped with tools that help them solve problems more quickly and effectively.

Learning objectives of this session include:
• Making the complex simple: how technology can play a role in democratizing ergonomics
• Improving the workplace: how to increase the effectiveness of ergonomics teams so they spend less time “finding it” and more time “fixing it”
• Scaling across an enterprise: how a common set of tools and methods makes it easier to integrate ergonomics across a global organization
