In 2023, ATD Research published Leadership Development which focused on how organizations train their leaders. In this new study, we’ll focus on the essential skills that make good leaders become great leaders. Topics in this report include emotional intelligence, communication, and trust. 

Key findings from this report:

  • 42 percent indicate their organization has a major skills gap in leadership and executive-level skills
  • 58 percent say their organization spends more on training leaders than on training employees overall
  • 73 percent say communication skills is a top-five skill
  • 28 percent rank communication skills as their top skill
  • 53 percent say their organization has a succession planning process

Rocki Basel, Ph.D. joined the Association for Talent Development (ATD) in 2022 and is the director of research. Before joining ATD, she was a researcher for other national membership organizations. Her research interests include workplace culture, employee engagement, mental health, and organizational communication. She has a Ph.D. in communication studies from Kent State University.
