Designing Better Controls for Ergonomics

Wednesday, March 20, 2024 2:00pm - 3:00pm EDT
Host: AIHA
By: Rick Barker, M.A., CPE, CSP, Senior Director of Solution Strategy , VelocityEHS; Blake McGowan, M.Sc., CPE, Solution Executive, VelocityEHS; and Rachel Zoky, CPE, Senior Strategic Consultant, VelocityEHS

Companies experience highly varied results from their ergonomics programs. One key factor is how effectively engineering controls maximize the fit between the work being performed and the population of workers performing the job. Four tools can promote improved design of controls: design guidelines, design principles, control verification, and lessons learned.

As a result of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the difference between design guidelines and design principles for ergonomics and the benefits of using each.
  • Establish an effective lessons-learned process for ergonomics that can be used for improving existing work and designing new equipment.
  • Discuss the benefits of combining objective risk scores with subjective feedback during control verification.
